How do I change the rear seal in my '92 Jeep xj 4.0 6 cyl.?

I have a 1992 Jeep xj Cherokee Laredo 4.0 6 cylinder

I have read some of the books on this but am getting conflicting ways to do it. Some say to remove theoil pan and then the reer main cap to get to it.

Others say that

If I remember properly the oil pan needs to come down so the trans can be removed.
