The Higgins Avenue and Broadway intersection contains a dicey trouble spot for bikers and drivers.
According to an analysis of one segment of crashes by the Missoula Institute for Sustainable Transportation, at least three bikers riding south on Higgins Avenue have been hit and injured the past six months by northbound cars making a left turn onto Broadway. The drivers each were cited by the Missoula Police Department.
"Everyone just needs to look out for each other," said Bob Giordano, executive director of the institute. "When I go through that intersection on my bike, because I know what's going on, I'm always looking for that driver to take that left turn, and I've had to swerve out of the way once."
On Monday, city Public Works Department director Steve King said a report has been commissioned for recommendations on how to fix the known hot spot, also a problem for cars that have to wait too long to turn. He isn't sure when the report will be complete, but he said a number of solutions are possible.
