BEULAVILLE — East Duplin senior Philip Pate knows his football team is preparing for the biggest game of the season.
The tight end understands the Panthers can clinch a third consecutive East Central 2-A Conference title with a win over league rival Northside on Friday in Beulaville and that a victory would give the Panthers plenty of momentum entering the state playoffs.
“We win Friday and we get a third straight conference championship, which has never been done in East Duplin history,” Pate said. “It’s really important for me, too, because I’ve never lost a conference game before.”
There’s something else Pate realizes.
He is aware that East Duplin’s offensive line will have to contribute if the Panthers (9-1, 6-0 ECC) are to defeat Northside (10-0, 6-0) in a game featuring a pair of ranked teams. East Duplin enters fourth in the latest AP state 2-A poll while the Monarchs are seventh.
“It starts with the offensive line,” Pate said. “First of all, we have to know our schemes and know what to do. That’s the first step is to know who to block. Second, we have to be focused come game time. We can’t have mental mistakes.”
It's not our fault, it was always burning since the world's been turning.

"Our offensive line has jelled together. We want to try to be ready this week and score more than we did last week (49). We want to try and run for days on them." High said even though Rider has lost some games that it's been a fun senior season. |

None of the three had ever played together on the same teams until this year, when they jelled as part of Sherman's 7-on-7 summer team. Hartman said he practiced with Butler some in Denison. Butler has made his presence felt on both sides of the line |

“I am very pleased, considering we only had one returning starter,” he said. “When we replaced him, we basically had five new starters. The progress they've made has been outstanding.” That one returning starter is no longer with the team. |
