SOUTHINGTON - A Warren man crashed into a school bus while it was about to load more students early Tuesday morning because he fell asleep, according to troopers. One student reported minor injuries.
Shawn D. Canzonetta, 37, was driving his 2000 Ford Windstar minivan behind the 2001 Freightliner school bus with 20 students on board when he fell asleep, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Canzonetta told investigators he fell asleep and awoke just prior to the accident, the report states.
He will be cited in the crash, authorities said.
The eastbound bus stopped about 7 a.m. on U.S. Route 422 just east of Lieby Osborne Road to load more students and had its red lights and stop sign activated when the bus driver, Catherine E. Heikkila, 66, of Southington, saw Canzonetta's car rapidly approaching.
Heikkila told the students about to board the bus to back away just before the van struck the back of the bus, the report states.
The crash shut down the eastbound lanes on 422 for about an hour.
