Hartung auto auction ends; biggest sale tops $200k
For decades, Lee Roy Hartung’s the antique cars and motorcycles occupied the same space. Over the weekend, they went their separate ways.
The auction of Hartung’s collection wrapped up Nov. 5 in Glenview. Some of the rarest items fetched hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Two of the most high-profile carsВ — a 1950 Edwards Roadster and a 1950 Veritas BMW — sold for $143,750, and $195,500, respectively.
Some motorcycles went for even more money than many cars. A 1911 Flying Merkel sold for $201,250, and the final price for a 1912 Harley-Davidson was $115,000.
The auction generated about $4 million.
“Just the fact that somebody had the foresight to procure these motorcycles and preserve them is rare in this day and age,” said Dave Steinberg, a prospective bidder who was browsing the motorcycles on Nov. 4. ( Gallery 1 , Gallery 2 )
The auction attracted serious car, motorcycle and auto memorabilia collectors from around the world. Even before bidding began for some of the most prized items, the site was buzzing.
