Ostaszewski: Time goes by, too fast, too slowly

I now have an adult child. My oldest, Kevin, turned 18 recently.

Thinking about it led me to a startling realization: I must be getting old. I'm not convinced of it, though. For starters, I don't feel old. In fact, in my mind I feel the same as I did 20 or 30 years ago. Looking in the mirror, however, tends to contradict this.

Although, what has really changed? Back in 1993, we had a Democratic president being demonized by right-wing conservatives, lead by Newt Gingrich. Conan O'Brien, David Letterman and Jay Leno all had their own late night talk shows. The lyrics to the popular songs kids listened to were inappropriate. And the only people who could figure out how to work the latest high tech devices - such as the cable remote - were under 23 years of age.

But whether I am feeling older or not, having an adult child automatically moves me up a generation. The son or daughter moves from being a minor to a young adult, thus pushing the parent of a minor to a parent of someone old enough to get a tattoo without parental permission.
